How we compared it

We do not run long-term performance tests, so stream stability, picture quality and support response times are things to check yourself during the trial. Channels and sports

A list that size raises an obvious question, and the dashboard answers it: you can edit your own channel list and keep only what you actually watch, so the 57,000 figure is a ceiling rather than something you have to wade through.

A headline count is still a poor guide to whether the handful of channels you actually pay for are there. Search for your own channels by name during the trial, and watch one live game on the evening you normally watch, because a busy evening is when any IPTV service carries the most load.

Picture quality

VIPSATV sells its line-up as 4K and FHD. Whether that holds on your screen depends on the provider’s servers and on your own connection, and only a trial on your own setup can answer it.

VIPSATV recommends 25 Mbps for a 4K stream. Meet it during the evening and the provider is the variable; sit below it and nothing will look good. During the trial, put a 4K channel on your largest screen for a full match or a film and watch for the picture softening or pausing, then try the FHD version of the same channel for comparison. The dashboard

This is the part most reviews skip, and it is where VIPSATV’s published feature list goes further than it needs to.

Each connection on your plan gets its own name. If you run a line in the living room and one in the bedroom, you can label them as such, which sounds trivial until you are trying to work out which device is the one buffering.

You can also edit your own channel list from the dashboard. Strip out the feeds you will never watch, keep the locals and the sports feeds, and your guide shrinks to the channels you chose. On a 57,000-channel service this is the difference between a guide you can use and one you scroll through.

The login details for every line sit in the account page, so re-entering a player after a mistyped password means copying from one place rather than hunting through old emails.

Support

A marketing page cannot tell you how good support is, and neither can a handful of messages. The trial is the time to find out for yourself: send one ordinary question, such as how many connections a plan includes or which login format to use in your player, and note how the reply arrives and whether it actually answers the question. How a provider treats a prospect is the best available signal for how it will treat a paying customer later on.

The signup-then-trial flow

• Your devices. Set it up on the TV you use most, and on a second device if you plan to buy more than one connection.

Player apps and devices

VIPSATV’s device list covers Firestick, Smart TV, Android, Apple TV, iOS, MAG and PC. On most of those you watch through a player app rather than a dedicated one, and the player needs one of two login formats.

• M3U playlist. A single link that lists every channel. The player reads it and builds the channel list, and guide data usually comes from a separate EPG link.
• Xtream Codes login. A server address, a username and a password. The player pulls live channels, on-demand titles and guide data from the server in one go, which is usually the simpler option when a player supports it.

Multi-connection plans

A connection is one simultaneous stream. On a single-connection plan, starting a second stream usually knocks the first offline, which most households discover at the worst possible moment.

VIPSATV sells multi-device plans, and each connection can be named in the dashboard. Count the screens that might realistically be on at once on a Sunday afternoon, not the average weekday, and buy for that number.
